Loy Krathong Festival 2008
Loy Krathong is a beautiful festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand on the full moon night of the twelfth lunar month, which is usually in November. This festival comes at the end of the Rainy Season when the rivers are high and lakes are full.
It is traditionally the time of year for Thai Buddhists to give thanks to the Goddess of the Water for her plentiful supply and also an opportunity to apologise to her for polluting the waters throughout the year.
Loy Krathong literally means ‘Floating Vessel’ and the krathong is traditionally made using a cross-section of a banana tree trunk about 3-4 cms thick for the base. The outside edge of the base will be decorated with artistically folded banana leaves, while inside there will be a centre candle and three incense sticks.
Many people will add a clipping of their finger nails and a snippet of hair together with some small coins, before making a wish and floating their krathong on the waters. By so doing they hope that any bad luck will also float away from them and that the coming season will be filled with happiness and good fortune.
Of the many festivals held throughout Thailand each year, this is undoubtedly the most beautiful and most romantic of them all.
