Cha Am

Cha-am is located 160 kilometers south of Bangkok on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand.

It is in the province of Phetchaburi and is well known for its splendid historical park, ancient temples, wonderful beaches and caves, as well as a great variety of local and fresh seafood.

Once a low-key fishing and market village, Cha-am has grown in popularity, particularly with local Thais who yearn for a weekend escape from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

Cha-am boasts Thailand’s longest white sand beach and is the premier beach resort in the province.

The majority of the local residents are engaged in agricultural activities including rice farming, upland crop farming, fruit farming, palm sugar production, animal husbandry and sea and fresh water fisheries.

Cha-am is mainly know for its fresh seafood, and eating and drinking in a relaxing seaside environment is the main draw for the locals.

The local fare can be enjoyed at both open-air eateries with umbrella-shaded tables out on the beach, and more traditional restaurants near the north end of the beach or cantilevered out over the water on stilts at the edge of the harbour.

The beaches are not crowded, with warm gentle waters perfect for swimming. There are a variety of wandering vendors selling silk and cotton fabric, scarves and hand-carved wooden statues. There are also horses for hire should you fancy a canter along the beach.

A little south of Cha-Am, the summer palace of King Rama VI called Phra Ratchaniwet Marukhathayawan is open to the public.

The palace consists of a series of one-and-two-floor units on stilts, linked by covered walkways. The whole structure is made of teak, with shuttered windows and tiled roofs similar to those of Vimanmek Mansion in Bangkok.

The largest national park in Thailand, Kaeng Krachan National Park, is in Petchaburi Province, near to Cha Am. It covers 2,915 square kilometers and has a variety of natural charms, such as lakes, waterfalls, caves, cliffs. A visit is included on the two-day tour.

Note: On Wednesdays the summer palace is closed and there are no deck chairs allowed on the beach.
